Congressman Tonko Visits MPMS Hometown Health Center & Learns About Work of Crisis Prevention Team

Congressman Tonko Visits MPMS Hometown HealthCongressman Paul Tonko continued his spotlight on mental health with a visit to Mont Pleasant Middle School's Hometown Health Center Thursday.  Tonko learned about the services offered in the school-based center and met with members of the district's Mobile Crisis Team, as well as, school and Hometown Health nurses, to learn about the work being done to serve and support the mental health needs of students.

Tonko also spoke with Larry Spring, superintendent of schools and Joe Gambino, CEO of Hometown Health Centers.  

Tonko said that he is impressed with the work underway in Schenectady and referred to the district as "cutting edge."  He reiterated the importance of addressing the mental health needs of students and expressed continued support in this area.

Tonko recently introduced a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the School-Based Health Centers program through 2023.  He also cosponsors the Mental Health in Schools Act of 2017, which would assist local communities and school in applying a public health approach to mental health services.
