The History of
 The Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892 for "The Youth's Companion".

"The Youth's Companion" was celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival.

They were going to have a school celebration for Columbus Day.

Francis Bellamy and James Upham worked at the magazine. They wrote the pledge for the children to say.  In 1892 it went like this:

I pledge allegiance to my flag
and to the republic for which it stands
one nation, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.
