The History of Flag Day

Bernard J. Cigranid was a public school teacher in Fredonia, Wisconsin. He did a Flag Day program with his kids for the birthday of the flag in June 1885. He called it Flag Birthday. George Balch was a New York kindergarten teacher who did a Flag Day program with his kids. The New York State Board of Education liked his Flag Day and started other special programs. In 1894, the governor of New York wanted the American flag to be displayed on all public buildings. On May 30, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14th as Flag Day. On August 3, 1949 President Truman signed an Act of Congress that June 14th is National Flag Day.
