Instructions

This scavenger hunt is designed to teach you where to get help on the Internet 1) when you are stuck on a specific math problem, 2) when you don’t understand a math concept or skill, or 3) when you need drill in arithmetic facts (adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing). As you go through this hunt you will also see many other links to activities and games. You will go through each site and follow all the directions on your worksheet until you have done the entire hunt.


NOW TO GET STARTED! First, print out a copy of your worksheet. You will record all your answers in this worksheet. If you also want to print out a copy of the directions below, click here. Now, start!

Site number 1: Math Drill.

Go to http://www.mathdrill.com/

    1. Click on "Go To Problems" on the left side of your screen.
    2. For Problem Level #, scroll down and try out a few different types of problems. When you are comfortable with the way it works, choose one of the topics in which you could use some practice. Come on, everyone can use practice in at least one math skill (o;
    3. For # of Problems, choose 6.
    4. For # of Columns, choose 3.
    5. Click on "More Problems" to set the timer back at 0:00:00.
    6. As soon as you are done with the problems, click on "Check Answers" to stop the timer.
    7. Record your score and your time in your worksheet.

This is a great site to help you improve your arithmetic skills.

 

Site number 2: Education for Kids

Go to http://www.edu4kids.com/

    1. Click on Math Flashcards for Kids,
    2. Click on one of the math operations (Type of math) and use the directions below to go through a few problems so you can become familiar with the flashcards.
    3. When you are comfortable with the page, for "Complexity," click on either ‘Easy" or "Simple",
    4. For "Number Size," click on at least "0 – 9",
    5. Click "Score On,"
    6. Click "Timer On,"
    7. Click on "View Problem" Vertical,
    8. For "Enter the number of problems you want to count," type in as many as you want to do, between 10 and 25.
    9. Click on "Press me to get started."
    10. Important note: Watch how many you have done as you go through the drill; the game doesn’t automatically stop when you have completed the number you chose. If you find you started over hit the "back" button until you get to your time and score.
    11. Work the problems.
    12. On your answer sheet, record the number of problems you did, your score, and your time.

Site number 3: Surfing the Net with Kids

Go to http://www.bigchalk.com/

    1. Click on the "Students" picture.
    2. Chick on "Tutors," (the left side of the screen).
    3. Click on "Math," what else? (o;
    4. Go to the right side, under "Tutorial Practice and Games." Click on "games and puzzles."
    5. Under "Basic Games," click on Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division.
    6. Under "Matho," choose addition, multiplication, or division.
    7. Record your time and score.
    8. Then, click the "Back" button on your Internet Explorer task bar (up in the left corner).
    9. Click under "Hidden Picture," Subtraction version.
    10. Work the hidden picture.
    11. Record on your worksheet what the hidden picture was.

Site number 4: Berit’s Best Sites for Children

Go to http://beritsbest.com/

    1. Click on "Serious Stuff."
    2. Now click on "Math."
    3. Click on "MegaMath Tables," then, "Visit This Site."
    4. Click on "World of Tables" in the right hand box.
    5. Click on the jester "Pick a Number."
    6. Then, click on one of the cards.
    7. Click on "Table Tournament," (the blue clover).
    8. Play the game and record your score on your worksheet.
    9. Read the directions and hit "start."
    10. Type in the answer to the multiplication problems. You must also hit the swatter to keep the spider away.
    11. Go back to the "Pick a Number" page again, and click on "Grid Game" or "MegaMaze."
    12. Set your level and time. Play around with either or both to become familiar with the games.
    13. Now play one of the challenges.
    14. Record your time and score on your worksheet.

 

Site number 5: Cool Math

Go to http://www.coolmath.com/

    1. Click on "Ages 13 – 100."
    2. Click on "Games."
    3. Scroll down and click on "Math Word Search."
    4. Click on "New Game." If you don’t like the words, continue clicking on
    5. "New Game" until you see words you know.

    6. When you are finished, record your time and 10 of the words on your worksheet. Spell them correctly, please.
    7. Now click the back button, click on "Games," and scroll down to "Math."
    8. Choose ArithmATTACK!
    9. Follow the directions for playing.
    10. Record your score on your worksheet.

 

 Site number 6: Allmath

Go to http://www.allmath.com/flashcards.asp

    1. Scroll down to the different choices and click on "Biographies of Math."
    2. Under "Search Our Biographies," click on "A through B."
    3. Scroll down and click on "Charles Babbage."
    4. Read through the paragraph to find out why he is considered a pioneer.
    5. Record your answer in a complete sentence on your worksheet.

Remember this site if you ever have to write a report about a famous mathematician.

 

 

Site number 7: Maze Works

Go to http://www.mazeworks.com/hanoi/

    1. Read through the directions.
    2. Remember that you can’t place a large disk on a smaller one.
    3. Try the game first with 3 disks.
    4. Record your time.
    5. Now, try it with at least 4 disks.
    6. Record your time.
