This scavenger hunt is an exploration of entrepreneurship. Using the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Company website, students will learn the fundamentals of starting a socially conscious profitable business. This scavenger hunt leads students through the history and philosophy of this international business. Along the way, students learn anyone can start a small business, have it grow into a large corporation, and still maintain a quality product that seeks to protect the environment, the consumer, and employees.
This treasure hunt was developed as an integrated project, business with science, as a way to encourage the less able student to learn to navigate and search for information as well as to learn what is necessary to create their own business.
LEARNERS
I have used this hunt with my junior classes in a special program we offer at Shaker High School called the Integrated Regents Program. In this program we integrate business with math and science to ensure all students have an opportunity to earn a regents diploma and to adequately prepare them from college. Through a team of teachers, we coordinate topics in all three areas to demonstrate the applicability of each topic.
When students complete this project, they are learning business principles as well as science and math applications.
RESOURCES
Students will need an internet connection to answer the questions and a printer to complete the bonus activities.

3b-1. Basic Business Understanding

3b-2. Business-Related Technology
Select, apply, and troubleshoot hardware and software used in the processing of business transactions.
3b-3 Information Management/Communication
Prepare, maintain, interpret/analyze, and transmit/distribute information in a variety of formats while demonstrating the oral, nonverbal, and written communication skills essential for working in today's international service-/information-/technological-based economy
PROCESS
Given the key words, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, students will find the Ben & Jerry’s website. From this website, students hunt for answers to the scavenger hunt. Questions will center around business and science discussions.
EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated by the number of correct answers they were able to find. At the end of this activity, a local Ben & Jerry’s franchise owner comes to class to discuss how to start a franchise, what it is like to work for Ben & Jerry's, and answer any questions generated from their web search. This level of student enjoys completing the bonus assignment to set the stage for the presentation.
