Nearly 900 dancers & cheerleaders will compete
at Schenectady High School in Saturday Competition
Former SHS student, now Miami HEAT Dancer, will judge
Nearly
900 students will be competing in the Midnight Madness Cheerleading
and Dance Competition at Schenectady High School on Saturday,
February 6 beginning at 5 p.m. One of the competition
judges is Edwina Kaliku, an alumna of Schenectady High School, who
is currently a member of the Miami HEAT Dance Team. Tickets to
the event are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
The
Midnight Madness competition includes groups from more than 30 local
schools including Colonie, Catholic Central, Mohonasen, Ravena,
Guilderland, Schuylerville, Troy, Burnt Hills Ballston Lake,
Niskayuna, Shenendehowa, Bishop Maginn, Mayfield, Schalmont, Albany,
Moriah, Scotia, Northville, host school Schenectady and more.
Dancers from CNY All Stars, Triple Threat All Stars, Ferrera All
Stars and Platinum Elite All Stars will also be competing.
The
competition is coordinated by Christine Owens, Schenectady High
School varsity cheerleading coach and math teacher at Oneida Middle
School and Meegan Mostransky, former Schenectady High School varsity
cheerleading coach and Social Studies teacher at Oneida.
Mostransky is also the coach of the Siena Dance Team.
About Edwina Kaliku
Kaliku
started her dance career as a member of the Schenectady High School
cheerleading and dance team under the direction of Mostransky.
She was a member of the team for three years and served as captain
of the JV and varsity squads.
Kaliku
went on to attend the University of Albany where she earned a
Bachelors degree in Africana Studies and Sociology. As a
member of the UAlbany dance team, she won an award for "technical
excellence." She was President of the Class of 2005 and
graduated with honors.
Following her under graduate studies, Kaliku earned a full
scholarship to the Masters program at UAlbany where she earned a
degree in Africana Studies.
Kaliku
is a former member of the Albany Conquest Treasures Dance Team, now
known as the Albany Firebirds, the Albany Patroons Dance Team and
the Adirondack Wildcats Dance Team. In 2008, she was a
founding member of the all-girl dance crew Limited Edition, which
performed at various events throughout the capital region.
Kaliku
resides in Miami, Florida and is a proud member of the Miami HEAT
Dancers for the 2009-2010 Season. The Miami HEAT Dancers are
the four-time "Most Popular Dance Team in the NBA." The team
is comprised of very talented women from all over the world.
Kaliku works as the Assistant Director of Admissions at the Miami
International University of Art and Design.
