Developing Trauma Informed Schools

Under Tenet 5 of the District Comprehensive Education Plan (DCIP), the Office of Pupil Personnel Service is leading the development and implementation of pro-social curriculum to support social and emotional developmental health of students.   This work includes developing and implementing trauma informed schools.

In a trauma-informed school, the adults in the school community are prepared to recognize and respond to those who have been impacted by traumatic stress.  Adults include administrators, teachers, staff, parents and law enforcement.  In addition, students are provided with clear expectations and communication strategies to guide them through stressful situations.  The goal is to  not only provide tools to cope with extreme situations but to create and underlying culture of respect and support.

Education, training and the development of a vision and goals is underway.  Many activities, to support the development of trauma informed schools, including ongoing professional development, turnkey training, the study and selection of a model, development of a framework and plan for implementation and communication is forthcoming.
