Dear Schenectady Families,

As we near the halfway point of summer, many of you may be wondering what the new school year will look like.  Like most families across the region, I’m sure you have some questions.

In the Schenectady City School District, we are planning for a full return to school in September.  However, at this time, we are awaiting guidance from the New York State Department of Health and the Schenectady County Department of Health regarding protocols we must follow.  Among the areas for which we need guidance are protocols for mask wearing, social distancing in classrooms, cafeterias and on school buses.  This information is critical to our planning for a learning environment that keeps our students and staff safe and healthy.  Once we receive this guidance, we will be able to formulate a detailed, realistic plan that we will share with you.  We are hopeful that the guidance will be released soon.

I can share with you that our district is planning to participate in the remote instructional model being coordinated through Capital Region BOCES, for students to attend virtually due to medical reasons.  This will be opt-in enrollment with a doctor’s note. The intent of the program is to provide a fully remote, full year K-12 program.  This model will provide instruction that will align to the New York State Learning Standards and will be offered to students from multiple school districts taught by New York State certified, highly qualified teachers with experience teaching in a remote environment.  More details about this model will be available soon.

Students enrolled in the full-year virtual program will not have access to all the typical electives and in-person programs (such as the International Baccalaureate program at the high school).

You will soon receive information that’s specific to your student’s individual school as well as updates from me regarding the new school year.  In the meantime, if you believe your child(ren) will need to take advantage of the fully-remote option for school in September due to medical reasons, please let us know by completing a short survey available here by August 13.

If you have questions, please submit them through Let’s Talk under 2021-2022 School Year.

Thank you for your patience.  We look forward to welcoming your children back.
