Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

We are writing today to let you know that, at this time, masks are still required in school.

As you may know, on Friday afternoon, New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker issued a letter informing the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that New York would ease the mask requirements in schools as early as Monday, June 7.  Since districts have not received any definite guidance from the state regarding mask requirements or any other changes to COVID health and safety protocols, masks are still required in Schenectady schools as well as other public schools.

As a region, the 24 districts that comprise Capital Region BOCES (including Schenectady), will not make any changes to mask policies until clear guidance is received. Mask wearing will continue in accordance with our district’s Reopening Plans that were developed based on the comprehensive state guidance from last summer.

District policies include requirements for mask use on school buses, in classrooms, in school hallways and on playgrounds. Teachers and staff members do allow students to take mask breaks when appropriate social distancing is possible inside the school.  When outside, mask restrictions are relaxed in accordance with applicable health and safety measures.

Dr. Aaron Bochniak, interim superintendent of schools, said that our district has taken a measured approach throughout the course of the pandemic.  We will continue to be cautious and diligent which includes following all existing health and safety protocols. Dr. Bochniak said that if we receive official notification of any changes or updates to the guidance, we will communicate any changes to our families and staff members. We will continue to partner with our local department of health, in concert with the other component school districts throughout the region, before making or announcing any changes to our COVID protocols.

We appreciate the diligence of everyone in our school community and ask that you continue to be diligent and follow all health and safety protocols in place.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s principal.
