Zoller Students March to the Beat of their Own Drums

Tony Vacca, an internationally renowned percussionist and composer, recently spent a day with students at Zoller Elementary School. Vacca is known for using his music, spoken word, and rhythm to address topics like cultural diversity and social awareness. During the school day, he familiarized Zoller students with various types of drums, such as the balafon, gongs, djembes, the dun-dun, and the tama drum. Students were given a chance to play the instruments and practice a few basic songs.

During his visit, Vacca was accompanied by Abdou Sarr, a dancer and musician from the country of Senegal. Sarr expanded the students’ understanding of the world’s musical diversity by demonstrating different dance techniques. The pair dazzled students, parents, and other community members at a free concert in the evening.
