Yates Benefit Raises More than $1000 for Haiti Relief

Yates Magnet School fifth grader Adem Jones came up with the  idea to hold a school concert to raise money for Haiti.  He approached his music teacher Teryl Mertzeis who helped the student put his idea in to action.  Not only did the the school come together and hold a standing room concert three weeks later,  but students and teachers throughout the school stepped up to the plate with a plan.

More than $800 was collected at the door before the concert which took place earlier this month.  The show included singing performances by the  students and a 45 minute performance by The  String Ensemble, under the direction of teacher Colleen Boswell.

Students also helped out by demonstrating positive behavior in school.  The Yates Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) committee donated 19 cents for every positive referral earned during the week for a total of $50.

Kindergarten and first grade classes collected bottles and cans, adding another $10.  Joanne Arey's fourth graders created Haitian flags that were sold during the concert and Richard Roe and Dawn Cagnina, magnet program staff members, held a bake sale that raised more than $150.

Through all the efforts of the parents, teachers and students, Yates raised more than $1,000 for Haiti.
