The
documentary “Arctic Air” was premiered at Yates Arts In
Education Magnet School on March15, 2011.
The documentary, which was produced by WCNY in Syracuse,
features a look at the men and women of the Scotia-based 109th
Airlift Wing. Local dignitaries were invited to attend the
“red carpet” event, which featured student paparazzi and
special reception afterwards.
The members of
the Air National Guard volunteer at Yates and help students
with a variety of school activities. Their main mission out
of Stratton is to assist with scientific missions to the
Arctic. The documentary focuses on the efforts and skills of
the flight crews, delivering equipment and maneuvering their
planes in the snowy environment.
The
guests for the event included Amy Manley of WCNY
(the director of the documentary), Superintendent John
Yagielski, and members of the Animal Protective Foundation
and Chamber of Commerce. Members of the 109th
were interviewed by students after they were treated to a
special red carpet walk of fame. 5th and 6th
grade guests were treated to a reception and mingled with
the attendees for further discussion about the 109th
incredible work.
