Students learn about Jazz during "Informance"

Zoller Vocal Music Teacher Greg Cortelyou and a group of fellow teachers and musicians performed for the students at Yates on Friday, June 15 as part of a Jazz Informance - a sort of music lesson wrapped up in a Jazz concert.

Students viewed a short PowerPoint presentation about the history of Jazz, and learned the names of some of the most famous Jazz performers of all time like Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith.

The group performed jazz renditions of favorites like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "The ABCs." Students were also treated to a rap by MPMS music teacher and SHS Boys' Choir Director Dave Gleason.

Each musician gave students a brief lesson on his instrument, pointing out where the sound comes from. Students also heard about how each performer got his start in the music business.
