Yates Arts In Education Magnet School

Principal Scott to be recognized for excellence in teaching

Yates Arts-In-Education Magnet School Principal Valarie Scott will be the 2007 recipient of the Bertha Brimmer Medal - an award given by SUNY Albany each year to one alumnus for excellence in teaching and dedication to the profession.

The award is named after SUNY Albany alumnus Bertha Brimmer, who graduated from the school in 1900 and went on to become a teacher. It was originally established in 1934, and since then it has been awarded to one alumnus from the School of Education every year.

The medal is one of 12 annual awards the school gives to alumni. The awards will be handed out at an alumni gala in June.

"It's an incredible honor to be recognized for dedication to education," Scott said. "There are thousands of SUNY Albany School of Education graduates, and only one of these awards given each year. When I think of the company I'm keeping I'm extremely honored."

Scott was nominated for the award by Ruth Schulman, the director of development/major gifts officer for the SUNY Albany School of Education. She also received a letter of support from Schenectady Schools Superintendent Eric Ely.

Scott received her Education Administration Master's Degree from SUNY Albany, and has continued to stay involved with the school. She is currently on the Dean's Steering Committee for the School of Education, the President of Phi Delta Kappa, and every year she does a session on "Tips and Information in Hiring" for graduate students at the School of Education
