Tips from the Yates Reading Teachers

Welcome back to school everyone!  We would like to introduce ourselves to you.  We are Mrs. George, Mrs. Zander, Mrs. Sample, and Ms. D'Alessandro, the Reading First coach.  Our job is to assist the classroom teachers by working directly with students during reading time.  We are available before school if you have any questions.  You can also call the office and leave a message for us and we will get back to you.

We have a new program called the Yates Classroom Book Club.  The Reading Staff is providing each classroom with a new box of books each month for students to borrow.  Each teacher will set up a simple lending system so your child can borrow books anytime, not just on library day.  We hope you will encourage your children to borrow books from the Yates Classroom Book Club and ask them to read to you at home.

There is also a large basket near the ;office with books for parents to borrow.  Please feel free to borrow from this basket and return the books as you finish them.  We will gladly take book donations for this basket as well.  If you have any appropriate adult books you have read and don't want anymore, please leave them with the secretary and she will get them to us.

Each month in this newsletter we will give you suggestions to support your child as a reader.

September Reading Tip

Start a habit of taking your family to the public library.  It's Free!  It's a great way to spend an inexpensive afternoon.  You can borrow books, videos, books on tape, and use the computers.  They also have programs for all ages.  You will be letting your child know reading is important and fun.  If parents read to their children, often their children will want to read for themselves.  It's like riding a bike or playing basketball.  The more they read, the better they get at it, the more they will enjoy reading and the more successful they will be in school.
