Mrs. Buchanan
and Ms. Stanley, Kindergarten
Spring is here and so are our weather kits. The kindergarteners will
be observing and recording the weather, learning about wind and
clouds, reading thermometers and experimenting with water. We are
wrapping up our year-long magnet theme on Frog and Toad. Students
have created a wonderful town for Frog and Toad outside the
kindergarten classrooms. We've learned about friendship and all the
adventures of Frog and Toad. Mrs. Loiacano has been working with the
kindergarteners on friendship songs in music class, which they will
be performing at our next BEST Assembly on May 14. Parents are
encouraged to attend the assembly.
Here are some stories
Ms. Stanley's class created:
Frog and Toad
Go to the Store
Frog and Toad are friends. They go to the store. They
buy a teddy bear. They go home and play with it. They name
it Teddy |
The New

Frog and Toad get new houses. They get new furniture.
They have new pillows. They buy food and eat at the tables.
The drink lemonade and go out to play. |
Frog and Toad
Go Ice Skating
Frog and Toad go ice skating. They fall down! Oops! They
get up. Frog helps Toad skate. Toad becomes a good skater.
They went home. They drank ho cocoa. They brushed their
teeth and went to bed. |
Mrs. Carey's
& Mrs. Scorzelli's 2nd Grades
During the month of March the second grades learned about gardening
and agriculture through a program from the Regional Food Bank. Each
of the second grade classes had a guest reader who read from the
book "Lily's Garden." The book discusses gardening throughout the
seasons. At the end of the program the books were donated to the
library. Coming up in May will be the second grade production of
Commotion of the Ocean. The date for this performance has not been
set.
Mrs. Hull's 4th Grade
"Spring Fever" has landed in our classroom! I trust this is healthy.
The students are finally getting outside for recess and fresh air
does a body good. Of course, it does have it's drawbacks inside, but
it's all in a day's work.
Our GE Scientists
program is stronger than ever and the kids wish we can have them
here every week instead of every other. They are about to begin
discussing experiments with them, gearing up for our wonderful
Science Fair to be held in early June. Watch for a letter coming
home announcing the date. The scientists fully prepare the students
as well as supply them with everything they need for the experiment
they choose. It is an awesome tire; families are all invited and the
kids are very proud to show off their demonstrations. You will be
hearing more from Mrs. O'Malley and me on this very soon.
I would love to see
our students reading every night and be able to retell what they've
read. And, let's not forget expression! Without it, our stories
would be quite boring. Hopefully they are reading at least 20
minutes a day.
As always, if any of
you has questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Mrs. O'Malley's 4th Grade
Our fourth graders have finally completed the last of the fourth
grade state tests. We took the New York State Science test at the
end of April. They all did a wonderful job!!!! We have been working
on many things in fourth grade specifically studying for the science
test and learning about electricity. In math we have started to
learn more about fractions and what positive and negative numbers
mean and how to use them. Even though the end of the year is
approaching fast we still have a lot of things left to do. May will
continue to bring in our GE Scientists on Tuesdays but with a new
twist, they will be helping the students get ready for a science
fair. The GE Scientists will be working with both fourth grades.
please keep a lookout for the announcement of our fair.
Back in March we had
a "Poetry in Motion" performance and from the students poems they
created some works of art. So, the next time you are in the building
come upstairs and take a look at our creations. Below are three
poems that we created and performed.
I Dream...
by Alyscea and Kelsey
I dream I was a queen mountain lion standing on a giant
cliff.
The wind is blowing my dark gray fur in all different
directions.
Watching my colorful kingdom with my two hazel eyes,
seeing if they are on task
Thank goodness they voted me to be queen. |
I Dreamt...
by Kiara and Julian
I dreamt I was a slow green turtle
Living in the graceful waves of the sea
Swiftly swimming to my home in the corals
Out of reach of hunting seaman |
Out of this
World
by Darian and Derrasia
I wish I was an angel
Flying in the sky looking after people
Singing all around up in the clouds
humming and dancing non-stop
Making sure people are safe. |
Mrs. Giardono's 5th Grade
Spring is here! Our class will be working on our Canada research
reports. Each student will create a Canadian flag, which will be
displayed outside of our classroom. In May we will be having our own
Cinco de Mayo celebration!
We finished our Food
Chemistry Unit with a baking activity. Our class will be baking
homemade chocolate chip cookies. What a "sweet" way to wrap up the
unit. Thank you to everyone who donated items to help us bake our
cookies. The chocolate chip cookies were delicious. The students
really enjoyed this activity and had a great time with it.
We have started
working on our last science kit, Measuring Time. During this science
kit we have studies phases of the moon, time and many more
interesting things. Students will even illustrate their own daily
calendars. The students are going to love this unit! We will follow
up this unit with a field trip to the Schenectady Museum to see a
planetarium show. Our class also finished a program called Junior
Achievement where they learned about business and advertising. They
really enjoyed it and learned so much too.
Lastly, Mrs. Broyde
has been working on the Peacemaker program with our class.
We are so busy during
this time of year! Please encourage your child to keep up the good
work. I am so proud of them! Happy spring! Happy Birthday to:
Racheal - May 19th.
Mrs. Hindes'
& Mrs. Masterson's 6th Grades:
Sixth graders have been extremely busy working on a lot of different
things this year. We have spent a lot of time learning about past
civilizations this year and preparing for our "Renaissance Faire"
through the use of books, movies, the Internet and a field trip.
What a wonderful experience we had on our field trip to medieval
Times in new jersey. While there we had the opportunity to journey
back into the Middle Ages and view horsemanship and a jousting
tournament between knights while we ate a delicious feast....with
our hand of course! Silverware did not exist in the Middle Ages!!
In Math, we have been
working on integers, functions and graphing. Concepts continue to
increase in difficulty so it is important to keep up on homework and
review the lessons at home nightly.
In Science, we are
learning about Catastrophic Events. We will be working on this unit
for the remainder of the year. Currently we are going labs to help
us understand storms. We even built a vortex using two plastic soda
bottles to study how hurricanes and tornadoes work.
As we finish reading
"The Cay" by Theodore Taylor keep in mind all the other great books
he has written. Another story by this author is "Trouble with Tuck."
This story about a young girl Helen and her golden lab Tuck, is a
heart-warming story that is sure to teach some of life's great
lessons about friendship and endeavor. This would be a great red
this spring. |
