Dear Parents and Guardians,

March is here and Spring is on it's way, as we look out the window it doesn't seem that way, but we know it will be here eventually. The NYS math tests make it come in like a lion each year now. Our word of the month if Respect. This month we will be giving extra Yellow bees for showing even more respect. One way the children can show respect for each other is by how they work on the New York State tests and don't disturb others.

Many parents ask about the state tests and why it takes so long for the scored to be returned to them. The State Education Department controls when we can send the scores home to parents and let you know how your  child did on our Standardized Tests, which is why there is often a delay. Of course, as parents you know weekly tests, newsletters, conferences and report cards are the best indicator of progress for your child. report Cards will be coming home in March and you should see some indication of progress for your child. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact the teachers involved with the education of your child.

The next most frequently asked questions is: what can I do to help my child get ready for standardized tests. the best answer is continue to help them each day for school, asking questions about the work they are doing. make sure they get a good night's sleep (I know this one is hard, but I am amazed at the number of children who tell me their bed time is 2-4 hours later than mine). Eat a good breakfast (either at home or at school daily). Have pencils and erasers that they need (children worry about this more than you know). Be on time for school (parents you know how you feel when you start your day running late). Wear comfortable clothes (don't forget to layer in cool weather). All of these things add to the success of your child not only on tests, but every school day.

Lastly, testing is one aspect of what we are proud of that the children accomplish each day. Please remind your children that tests are important, but so are the four school rules of Yates and the many skills they learn from the moment they walk in the door.

Teddy Bear Wishes for a gentle start to Spring.
