Sch ool want to be
pediatricians,
veterinarians, actors,
chefs, teachers and even FBI
agents some day. In order to
do this, they'll have to go
to college - a goal that
each student can reach, SUNY
Chancellor John Ryan pointed
out.
"You have people who love
you and think you can go to
college," Ryan said.
Ryan, who oversees all 64
colleges in the state
university system, told the
students "there's a college
in New York for every one of
you."
In order to go to college
you have to learn something
new every day, Ryan said,
adding that students should
also "dream a lot" about
what they want to be after
they graduate from college.
Ryan's Jan. 24 visit with
Yates' 31 sixth graders was
part of a year-long project
to learn more about life
after high school.
Students have been studying
different colleges and
writing to college
presidents.
Principal Valarie Scott said
several students have
selected SUNY schools to
study, which is one of the
reasons why she invited Ryan
to her school.
“We want [the stu dents]
to understand the value of
college and that it’s never
too early to prepare,” Scott
said. “Even in 6th grade
there are things students
can and should be doing to
get ready for their future.”
Ryan made sure that the
students understood that
even if their parents don't
have a lot of money, college
is possible and scholarships
are available.
"We have 418,000 students,"
he said. "They come from
different parts of the
state, they are different
colors, different races,
different religions and they
have different amounts of
money."
Students were given the
opportunity to ask Ryan
questions about everything
from his days at the United
States Naval Academy and
what it's like to be a
Chancellor to what is
considered to be a good
score on the SATs.
