Keane Holds A
Seuss-Style Party
William
C. Keane Elementary School kicked off Read Across America, a
national event honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday, on Tuesday by
holding a festive afternoon celebration. Keane called in the
community and held a Seuss-style party that honored the author
and encouraged reading.
The students, who
wore creative “Cat in the Hat-Inspired” and other unique hats,
gathered in the auditorium where Principal John Sardos greeted
them. He then announced the winners of the hat contest in
which prizes were awarded for creativity.
The
celebration also included some singing. But, it was the large
smiles and loud laughter that gave away how much the students
were enjoying the celebration.
Schenectady Mayor
Brian Stratton led the students and teachers in a recitation of
“The Reader’s Oath,” a poem provided by the National Education
Association and Read Across America Day. It’s purpose is to
affirm the students’ dedication to reading.
After
reciting the oath, the students returned to their classrooms
where they enjoyed chatting with their guest who would select
and read a Dr. Seuss book out loud.
Fifteen guest
readers spent the afternoon at Keane talking with the classes
about Dr. Seuss, the importance of reading and each read a Seuss
story including “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Fox in Socks, The Cat in
the Hat,” and “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,” just to
name a few.
