Keane Holds A Seuss-Style Party

William C. Keane Elementary School kicked off  Read Across America, a national event honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday, on Tuesday by holding a festive afternoon celebration.  Keane called in the community and held a Seuss-style party that honored the author and encouraged reading.

The students, who  wore creative “Cat in the Hat-Inspired” and other unique hats, gathered in the auditorium where Principal John Sardos greeted them.  He then announced the winners of the hat contest in which prizes were awarded for creativity.

The celebration also included some singing.  But, it was the  large smiles and loud laughter that gave away how much the students were enjoying the celebration.

Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton led the students and teachers in a recitation of “The Reader’s Oath,” a poem provided by the National Education Association and Read Across America Day.  It’s purpose is to affirm the students’ dedication to reading.

After reciting the oath, the students returned to their classrooms where they enjoyed chatting with their guest who would select and read a Dr. Seuss book out loud.

Fifteen guest readers spent the afternoon at Keane talking with the classes about Dr. Seuss, the importance of reading and each read a Seuss story including “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Fox in Socks, The Cat in the Hat,” and “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,” just to name a few.

Guests included:

  • Ellie Rowland and Gerri Pinkerton, AAUW Mentors
  • Kaela Wallman, Librarian of the Duane Branch Library
  • Brian Stratton, Mayor of Schenectady
  • Maxine Brisport, President of the Board of Education
  • Karl LaFountain, Schenectady Fireman
  • Cora Schroetter, representative from Congressman Paul Tonko’s Office
  • James E. Welch, MSgt., and Staff Sergeant Randy Welch, NYANG Stratton Air Force Base
  • Henry Stevens and Carissa Vazzana, Union College Athletes
  • Tim Drawbridge, News Cannel 13 Weather Forecaster
  • Carmella Parente, Schenectady School District Social Studies Coordinator
  • David Hoag, quality Assurance Manager for Schenectady School District
  • Joseph DiCaprio, Principal of ACC at Pleasant Valley Elementary School
  • Karen Swain, Schenectady School District Testing Coordinator

Colorful balloons decorated the halls.  You could even spot a Dr. Seuss look-alike buzzing around Keane all afternoon.

Before wrapping up the afternoon celebration, the students, their teachers and classroom guests enjoyed birthday cake in honor of Dr. Seuss.  The cake, plates and plastic ware were donated by Price Chopper and Hannaford supermarkets.

The reading party that offered an afternoon of fun and excitement was coordinated by Dana DeMarco, reading teacher at Keane Elementary School.
