Nutcracker comes to Keane Elementary School

Students are called on stage to practice basic ballet moves.

The students at William C. Keane Elementary School  enjoyed a performance of the "The Nutcracker," recently.  The Saratoga Ballet Academy not only performed the holiday classic but the group members also gave the students a ballet lesson and answered their questions.

The dance performance followed a series of lessons presented to the classes in art, music, library and physical education.  They had all learned about Tchaikovsky's music, "The Nutcracker" characters and story. The students also learned about the various roles that contribute to a ballet production from costume and stage set design to dance steps such as pirouettes (a move the students learned in physical education class).

According to Cathryn Hunt, art teacher at Keane, the students were anxiously awaiting this day and became even more excited when it was time for the event to begin.

Members of the  academy demonstrated what ballet students do at the barre in a traditional ballet class.  They even called some students up to the stage to try some ballet steps.

According to Hunt, the students were captivated by the intricate steps and flair of the dancers, who also came off stage to talk to the students and answer their questions.

"Hopefully our students left school that day with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads," said Hunt.
