Students Partner with Pine Bush to "Help a Habitat"
Keane
Elementary School is involved in a program with the Albany Pine
Bush called "Help a Habitat." Through the program,
students participate in the restoration of the endangered Albany
Pine Bush landscape and "help a habitat."
In
the first part of the two-part program, students learn about the
natural history of the Albany Pine Bush ecosystem and the
challenges the Pine Bush faces today. The students then
participate in a hands-on habitat restoration project for the
federally endangered Karner blue butterfly.
In early March,
representatives from the Pine Bush visited the school to teach
students about Blue Lupine. Seeds of the blue lupine have
been planted in recycled containers and germinated in the
classroom. The students continue to care for the seedlings
until they are ready for planting.

The group will
complete part two of the project in May when they visit the
Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center and transplant the lupine
seedlings to a Karner blue butterfly habitat restoration area in
the Pine Bush Preserve.
