Adults
learning about America, language and culture
Washington Irving Education Center (WIEC) has a diverse learning
population with students from 21 different countries and
whose first language is not English. Many of the adult
students have children in our schools. Therefore, in order
to help the parents become literate and help their children
learn and practice English, many of the adult classes focus on
helping the adults understand the American culture, citizenship,
the community and experiences of American life.
Vietnam
Veteran Sullivan Alois, who is also a retired district
teacher and administrator, recently spoke to the classes about
American pride and having respect for our servicemen and women.
The students agree that they
enjoy working together while becoming integrated into the new
culture.
