Jesse Roylance,
Director of Washington Irving Adult Education Center
congratulated the 130 GED graduates at a recent board of
education meeting. He also thanked the many teachers
who continue to support the adult learners.
"Thank you for
inviting us here today to recognize the 2008-2009 NYS High
School Equivalency Diploma recipients.
WIEC has been
providing Adult Education Services since 1963 at our Mumford
Street location as well as at several satellite locations
throughout the area including study at home programs.
· WIEC
serves students aged 16 to 86
· We
offer a variety of services including being the new home of
Hispanic Outreach Services, nutrition classes in conjunction
with Cornell Cooperative, and financial management/banking
classes.
This is for some,
an endeavor into perseverance through adversity and roadblocks,
personal setbacks and tragedy. Adult students like Sunil Manroop
who did not complete his education in his native Guyana but came
to the US and studied at Washington Irving and on his own time
in the public library to achieve his goals. Sunil took each
setback he was faced with and remained positive and focused on
getting his GED. His story parallels so many of our students and
his success affirms for our staff and students the reason for
being a part of the programs at Washington Irving.

Adult education
students face additional challenges as many have families,
children and jobs to work around. This celebration is an
acknowledgement to their dedication to provide a better life not
only for themselves, but for the ones they love.
We should not
forget that our adult students are also the parents or future
parents of SCSD students. Many are trying to lead by example to
show their children that education is important. These parents
want to further their education to be better equipped to help
their children be successful as well as become partners in the
educational process.
130 Washington
Irving Students passed their GED exams for the 2008-2009 school
year. Of those, 73 were under 21.
9
have confirmed that the have been accepted to college this fall
and this number may double by the end of the school year.
Our youth GED
teacher, Dave Filkins, currently has 51 students that have
passed the GED exams this year.
Several of our 13
teachers are here today to support their students. Combined our
teachers have 125 years of experience.
Adult education
teachers serve many different roles other than just teacher. For
many they are the voice of hope, reason, counselor, advocate, or
just a shoulder to lean on. As an example of what these classes
mean to the students, one of our satellite teachers was battling
medical issues that did not let her drive to classes. Her
students picked her up and drove her to class each day for weeks
because they could not stand to miss out on their classes, and
knew that teaching meant just as much to the teacher as it did
to her students.
