Schenectady High
School students make a statement:
"Who I am Makes a Difference"
The Schenectady
High School "I Make a Difference" project, spearheaded by
the Family and Consumer Sciences Department and Speak Out Group,
was an effort to remind students and community that "who we are
makes a difference." Students from all of the high school
houses, several clubs including JROTC, Community Service Club,
the Craft Club and Spectrum (GSA) worked together to get this
very important message across to the entire school community.
Throughout
the school year, the students and their advisors, made more than
7,000 ribbons that read "who I am makes a difference." The
ribbons were distributed to all of the students and staff at
Schenectady High School last week as reminder that they
are important and do make a difference. The students were
given two ribbons - one to wear and one to pay forward to
someone in the community.
A
large mural showcasing the many ways that students make a
difference was displayed across from the main office.
Students from the high school family and consumer science
classes presented PowerPoint presentations to their peers.
Others shared poems and stories. Among the many topics was
gangs, body image and self-esteem, teen pregnancy and dropping
out of school. Visiting artist, storyteller and
percussionist John DeKadt, performed inspiring stories and drum
rhythms after school.
The Schenectady
High School GE Scholars School of Humanities and Culture, the
PTSO and Family and Consumer Sciences department sponsored the
project.
