High School
Teen Screen
available to all Schenectady High School students
In order to
increase mental health awareness, all Schenectady High School
students were introduced to the program TeenScreen.
Karen Nabors, LC.S.W. of Northeast Parent & Child society spent
an hour with each health class discussing mental health and the
signs and symptoms of depression and suicide.
TeenScreen
is a nationally-recognized program developed by Columbia
University to identify risk factors associated with depression,
anxiety and alcohol and substance abuse.
With parental
consent, students are pulled from class and brought to a private
setting at the school where they complete a three-step screening
process.
All screening
results are confidential and kept separate from school records.
Parents and
students are contacted if the professional recommends further
evaluation and to discuss ways the family can get help for their
teen.
For more
information about TeenScreen, please contact SHS health
teachers Bethany Furgele, Ryan Hull or Justin Peltier or contact
Karen Nabors at 381-3911.
