SCLA club gets
"Green" thumbs up
and a grant for recycling efforts
Steinmetz Career
and Leadership Academy's ACE Club (Alliance for Climate
Education) was recently awarded a $1000 grant from the Alliance
for Climate Education and National Grid Foundation for their
good green habits. SCLA was the only school awarded the
"Green Dependence Day Challenge Grant" from the entire area.
The school was recognized for efforts to reduce waste and
recycling.
SCLA students
Scott Ditmars, Marcus Landrau, Chris Ordon, Damien Girard and
Orlando Singh are the members involved in the Green project,
which includes an expanding recycling initiative, one that has
been in place for many years. Since September 2010, the
school has recycled 12,635 pounds of paper. On average,
each month, the students recycle between 800-1,200 pounds.
The paper, not headed for a landfill, will be reused and turned
into other paper products.
The school
continues to expand their efforts. SCLA recently added
cardboard to their building recycling efforts and will be
recycling glass, cans and plastic as well. Members of ACE
have been in touch with community agencies for assistance.
SCLA is also the
district's pilot school for discontinuing the use of Styrofoam
in the cafeteria at breakfast and lunch.
Congratulations to
SCLA ACE Club for their Green efforts which resulted with the
grant award.
