Students
are finishing their installation of sand painted mandalas in
the Sayles of School Arts Butzel Gallery. The project is
part of the Fine Arts Seminar unit on the study of how space
affects attitude and more specifically what creates a space
which could be referred to as sacred or one that creates a sense
of reverence or deep respect.
Students
identified several things in their lives which they hold sacred,
either in a spiritual sense or a secular sense. They
researched symbols and/or created symbols of their own which
represent those things they've deemed sacred. They have
seen how Tibetan Buddhist monks carry on the tradition of
ceremonially creating mandalas from sand.
Students then
created mandala that are full of symbolism by means of images,
ornamentation, and color. The installation involves taking
those mandalas and with a few grains at a time, recreating them
in sand by use of very small funnels and other tools. No
adhesives are used.
This work is
temporary.
At the end of
the show, the sand is swept up and joined together. The
work is a comment on the impermanence of all things on earth,
the need to recognize "the sacred" in one's life, and the need
for both artist and audience to be fully aware in the moment.
