Schenectady High
School Women’s Choir to Perform in Costa Rica
The John Sayles
School of Fine Arts Women's Choir will join the St. Rose Women’s
Chorale on a week-long performing tour of Costa Rica March 6-13.
The combined ensemble will perform concerts at the University of
Veritas in San José, the Catedral Metropolitano and The Catedral
de Grecia. They will also give music workshops for
elementary-aged children. The musical program includes classical
and sacred choral works, pops selections, and traditional Costa
Rican folk melodies. The goal of the tour is to bridge the gap
between high school and college while expanding the students’
knowledge of the world.
In Costa Rica, the
students will also participate in educational activities. They
will attend a singing workshop at the university, visit the
national museum, tour a coffee plantation, and participate in
science activities at a volcano and in the rainforest.
The JSSA students
have spent many hours outside of school rehearsing the music and
fundraising. In order to pay for the trip, an immense
fundraising operation has been underway since the beginning of
the school year. Donations, a daily snack bar, a car wash ticket
sale, and a cell phone recycling program have raised over
$16,000, but several thousand dollars more are still needed. The
ensemble is still seeking community donations.
The collaboration
between the two choirs started last year when Ms. Hawk, an
alumnus of St. Rose, was invited to bring her chorus to perform
a joint concert at St. Rose’s new concert hall.
The JSSFA Women’s
Choir is directed by Krista Hawk, a veteran teacher, who has
taught music in the Schenectady Schools for 24 years. The St.
Rose Women’s choral is directed by Dr. Joseph Eppink. The John
Sayles School of Fine Arts is an arts-focused learning community
at Schenectady High School.
