SHS Junior Wins Award from Soroptimist International
Congratulations to Schenectady High School Junior Susan
O'Brien who was recently awarded the Susan Rosenthal Memorial
Award from Soroptimist International of Schenectady.
The award is presented to a young woman photographer who shares
the same passion for photography as that of award-winning
photographer Susan Rosenthal. O'Brien, who submitted an essay
and example of her photography, was presented with a Nikon
Coolpix Digital Camera.
Rosenthal was
co-owner of "Northern Exposures." She published the book
"Beautiful Places," in which she showed off her talent and love
of Schenectady through her photographs. She was also past
president and 27 year member of Soroptimist International, an
organization that strives to achieve the "best for women."
Members work to raise money to support special projects, awards
and scholarships for local women, girls and organizations that
support women's issues.
Natalie Arket,
a 6th grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, was the
recipient a cash award of $800 for her "Pamper a Patriot
Project," which provides students with needs such as hats,
boots, pajamas and other clothing.
The League of
Women Voters received a $500 award for the Schenectady County
Working Group on Girls. Schenectady women work with 150
seventh grade girls on issues such as self-respect, relationship
concerns, empowerment, leadership and bullying. They also
focus on education and career goals.
Congratulations.
