Tips for Parents                                                                                To Top

The attitude and environment established by the parents/guardian at home are critical to a student's success in school.  Cooperation between parents and their children, and parents and the school is essential in developing sound study habits.

  1. Meet and keep in contact with the teachers of your child.  Feel free to e-mail (last name first initial@schenectady.k12.ny.us - for example:  doej@schenectady.k12.ny.us) or call the school to talk with a teacher, counselor, or an administrator on a regular basis.
  2. Take time to listen to your child; encourage them, and show an interest in their school work.
  3. Provide a place in the home where school work may be done and where school materials can be kept.
  4. Eliminate distractions, such as TV, video, music and noisy brothers and sisters.
  5. Encourage your child to get materials ready for school the night before.  This can save confusion and temper-flare ups in the morning and allow the student to be prepared and face the day with a positive attitude.
  6. Do whatever you can to start your child's day off on a positive note.
  7. Enforce reasonable hours for sleep and good eating habits.
  8. Get to know your child's friends and the extra school activities in which they are involved.
  9. Encourage your student to write all assignments and important dates, deadlines, and after school meetings with teachers in their planner/agenda.  Check the agenda regularly to ensure that your student is keeping up with their work.
  10. All students MUST have a Schenectady City School District issued lock for each locker.  Under NO circumstances will students be allowed to share lockers.
