Breanna Medina
SHS Sophomore Takes Top Spot in Regional Poetry Out Loud Contest
Congratulations to Breanna Medina, a 10th grader in the
Schenectady High School Sayles School of Fine Arts who took
first place at the regional
Poetry Out Loud
competition held on February 22 at the New
York State Museum.
Medina's
presentation earned her the top spot over 23 students from 13
schools across the region. She will represent Schenectady
High School at the state competition on March 6 at the Linda
Performing Art Studio in Albany.
Poetry Out Loud is
a national recitation contest created by the National Endowment
for the Arts and Poetry Foundation.
Contestants select
and memorize three poems from the Poetry Out Loud anthologies. At the
competition, they recite the selected poems before a set of judges. The contestant's
recitation of the poem is evaluated on physical presence, voice
and articulation, appropriateness of dramatization, level of
difficulty, evidence of understanding and overall performance.
Media recited “Alone” by Edgar Allen Poe and “Mother to Son”
by Langston Hughes. She was also prepared to recite Maya
Angelou's “Phenomenal Woman” as her free choice poem in the
event of a tie.
Each winner at the
state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to
Washington to compete for the national championship. The state
winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of
poetry books. A runner-up in each state will receive $100, with
$200 for his or her school library. A total of $50,000 in awards
and school stipends at the National Finals will be awarded to
the winners.
Medina advanced to
the regional competition after winning the Schenectady High
School contest, organized by high school English teacher Lori
Dempf.
