Guidance Department
Will your child be entering
high school next year?
Below is an
timeline of the transition process for students who are
currently in 8th grade and will be going to high school next
year.
October -
December
Middle School guidance counselors are meeting with students
to discuss their goals including careers, colleges and other
options.
December -
January
Schenectady High School house principals visit the middle
schools to discuss Smaller Learning Communities and house
courses/selections.
January
Middle School guidance counselors visit classrooms to review
high school graduation and course requirements.
Grade 8 Parent
Night is held in January.
Middle School
counselors send letter home to parents regarding scheduling and
course selection process.
Middle School
students meet individually with counselors to make house
selection and course selections. Graduation requirements
are reviewed again at this point.
March -
April
Students who want to visit the Career Center at Steinmetz
are invited to tour the school and learn about the programs.
Students
receive a list of their course requests.
August
Grade 8 - 9 students are invited to Schenectady High School
in late August. Parents are invited to a barbecue the same
evening to meet the child's house principal and many of their
teachers.
September
The first two days of high school are transition days for
all freshmen. Grade 9 students rotate through their
schedule over the two day period. Only freshmen are in the
building during this time to help them gain a sense of
familiarity and comfort. All students are presented with
information across all grade levels about the high school,
grading policies and other policies.
