Professionals talk to SHS students
about importance of writing

Schenectady High School students recently had the opportunity to talk with professional writers about their profession and integrating technology into their work.

English teacher Sonya Etkin gathered the group of writers to meet with nearly 70 sophomores in the Edison School of Math Science and Technology and provide them with first-hand accounts in their career fields.

"Students need to realize that writing, research and the integration of technology is not just something you do in a classroom for school," explained Etkin.  "We want the students to understand the significance of good writing, research, and how it connects and applies to the world beyond the classroom."

The panel of professionals included:

  • Ashely DelSignore, senior conversation manager, Media Logic

  • Leiah Bowden, corporate communications director, Daughters of Sarah

  • David Rodriguez, senior designer, Vicarious Visions

  • Melissa Holtzman, office manager, Vicarious Visions

  • Steve Sheinkin, history textbook writer

The speakers discussed writing and how the process worked in each of their careers.  They each shared their professional journey and answered the students' questions.

"We're excited about this opportunity for our students and are glad these professionals are willing to take time from their busy schedules to come to us," said Etkin.  "It is important for students to know how professionals utilizie writing and integrate technology within their various professions."
