Parents, Staff and other Stakeholders:

In the 2006-2007 school year our district was cited for our suspension rate for students with disabilities. In an effort to correct this, we have worked with our staff to assure the following:

1)  Increased Professional Development for all staff in the areas of student engagement and classroom management, Social Skills training and Second Step Violence Prevention

2)

Staff trained in  Therapeutic Crisis Intervention with  prevention and de-escalation techniques

3)  A program of Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies that has been implemented district wide

4) Students have  Functional Behavioral Assessments with  Behavior Intervention Plans in place to address any behaviors that might impact negatively on a student's academic  progress

5) Students Individualized Education Plans better reflect their individual needs

6) Behavioral Consultants used as appropriate

OPTS PILOT PROPOSAL
My name is Mary Ann Kenneally and my son James is on the NYS CARES wait list.  He attends Pine Ridge Industries Workshop operated by Schenectady ARC.  My husband and I recognize that we will not live forever, and our son will need to live with someone else when we are no longer able to take care of him.  As a parent of a child with a disability you may also foresee a time when you can no longer care for your loved one.

This year, the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) has initiated a new program called Options for People Through Services (OPTS) which provides for personal choices (person centered planning), community inclusion and flexibility in providing services.  It is a requirement of this new initiative that the individuals, their families, and/or advocates be involved in the planning and development of all services under OPTS.

I have an idea for an "OPTS pilot proposal" which I would like to share with you.  Our son/daughters with special needs would spend scheduled overnights with their peers in a homelike setting, to teach the skills necessary for them to live apart from the existing family.  Community activities would be planned by the participants based on their interests.  An added benefit would be the establishment of friendships and potential housemates.  You would be part of a process that would allow your loved ones to live without you.

If you are interested in supporting this proposal or would like more information about it, please call me, Mary Ann, at 377-3241

ADVOCATE! The Family Support Services Council Needs You!  Parents are needed to help develop family support services and policies for helping families meet the unique challenges of caring at home for a child or other relative with a disability. Services provided by the Family Support Services Council of the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) range from counseling and training to family reimbursement for purchases of goods and services. Parents of children with a developmental disability are welcome to participate in developing these family support plans for the Capital District Developmental Disabilities Service Office's 9-county district. Meetings take place one evening a month; attendance at all meetings is not required.  For further information, please call Mary Beth Romanzo at 486-1313 or Lucy Brady at 346-4722.
