We are excited to be
facilitating the Team Information Explorers
this year. We are confident that this
program will provide an innovative
enrichment opportunity for your children.
We will be using project-based learning to
create, research, and present topics that
relate to real-world issues. We would like
to share some of our main goals for the
program this year.
Goals and Objectives
-
Students will become
effective users of information
technology.
-
Students will engage in
guided inquiry activities to facilitate
deep questioning and knowledge on given
topics.
-
Students will utilize Web
2.0 tools such as blogging, wikis,
Google Apps, GMail to research topics
and create innovative final products.
-
Students will expand
their knowledge in the areas of
sustainability and globalism, and
digital citizenship.
1st Quarter:
If the World Were a Village
project. We will be reading the David Smith
book
If the World Were a Village,
which will then launch a project where
students will use the Google Suite of
products, including but not limited to
G-mail accounts, Google Forms (for surveys),
and Google Docs. Use of these digital tools
will also create opportunities for
discussion about digital citizenship and
21st century learning.
2nd Quarter:
Sustainability Project- Students will be
researching recycling. We will be
researching environmentally-friendly
alternatives to school lunch program foods
and materials. We will also create items out
of recycled materials and further research
environmental issues. We will continue to
use the Google Suite in addition to
accessing library databases and electronic
resources.
3rd Quarter:
Streets Project- We will be adopting the
STREETS curriculum, and transportation and
traffic trends study that originated in New
York City. Students will study traffic
patterns and environmental issues regarding
traffic around the schools. They will then
study the data and make recommendations /
develop solutions for traffic issues in
their areas.
4th Quarter:
This time frame will experience many
interruptions in the program due to testing
but we plan on doing a geocaching project in
Central Park as a culminating activity. We
also plan to do some reflection and think of
a project for next year.
Throughout the year, we will
be journaling about our experiences and
learning outcomes as we explore these
topics. Our journal entries will be posted
for parents and community members to see so
they can follow along with our adventures.
In addition, we have a
connection with a “sister” school in Tula,
Russia. We hope to communicate with
students there and seek their advice and
support throughout the school year.
We look forward to working
with your students this year. Please
contact us with any questions about the
program.
