Medication in School

A child's need to take medication can be determined only by his/her physician.  NYS Education Law requires that in order for any medication, prescription and/or non-prescription drugs, to be administered in school, the physical must submit orders to the school nurse.  The nurse must also receive a notice from the parent giving the nurse permission to administer the medication during the school day.

For the safety of all students, all medications must be transported to school by the parent or a responsible adult.  The medication must be kept under lock and key in the health office and under the supervision of the nurse.  Students should not carry any medication unless there is a medical reason which is authorized by the student's physician.

Most pharmacies will provide a separate labeled container for the dosage needed in school.  A pharmacy label is required, however, it is not a substitute for the written physician instructions.

If your child requires medication during the school day, please call the school nurse to discuss any questions of concerns you may have.
