Oneida Middle School Celebrates Diversity

The month of April was "Diversity Month" at Oneida Middle School.  The students and staff not only celebrated the diversity of the community but they also worked hard to come up with ways to promote acceptance and recognize different cultures.  The school held sales, contests and ended the month with a huge multicultural celebration.

The Oneida Study Circles held an array of activities throughout the month including a diversity bracelet sale and a slogan contest.  Zelekah Niles, Taylor Nichols Vick, Taylor Dundon, Draven Rodriguez and Kayla Macon received prizes and their slogans are posted in the school for all to enjoy.  Throughout Diversity Month, members of the foreign language department recited the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish and French.

More than 150 staff, students and their families attended Multicultural Night on April 29.  The event, sponsored by the school's PTO and Parent Partnership Team (PPT), offered Italian dinner buffet, desserts from around the world, student exhibits, poetry readings and performances by the Oneida Middle School Jazz Ensemble and Hip Hop Club.

Baskets, each with an international theme, were raffled off as door prizes.  A new diversity mural designed by art teacher Shelly Dante and 8th grade art students Keshawn LaPlante, Marquan Newman, Dany Escarrage, Henry Liebers, Emma Pasquali, Robert Alden, Perri Ottati, Legacy Fisher, Alexus Durham and Asante Caldwell, was unveiled in the front hallway outside the main office.
