James Moffett

James Moffett was the principal of Derby Hills Elementary School in Derby, Kansas. Throughout his career, Moffett has taught various demographic groups, observing the differences and similarities in effective instructional and behavioral strategies. Ultimately, James realized what we all know, meaningful relationships enhance behavior and academic success. Moffett often threw around the words “grit” and “perseverance”, but after viewing Paper Tigers, it came full circle. Since then, James worked to create a trauma-informed environment at Derby Hills Elementary, encompassing safe spots, mindfulness, self-regulation and an explicit SEL curriculum. James recently resigned his position as principal to take on full time consulting work. He launched JM Educational Consulting in April of 2019 and is looking forward to sharing the trauma informed message around the globe.

Is Your School a Rules-First Campus or a Relationship First Campus?

You say you have a trauma-responsive school. But does the culture truly align? This session breaks down the shift from rules first to relationship first that must occur for a school to truly be trauma responsive. This shift includes instruction, expectations and relationships within your building. Don't just talk the talk, walk the walk in making your school a safe, connected environment for EVERY student that walks in your door.

Staying the Course - Maintaining the Momentum Despite the Barriers

As the principal of a second year, fully-implemented trauma-informed school, James Moffett remembers the challenges of communicating the WHY to staff, building trauma-informed capacity, establishing momentum, and sustaining the change all too well. In this session, James will reflect on his school's journey and work to help others avoid some of the mistakes he made along the way.
