2017 SCSD Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees are announced

The Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce that the 2017 inductees will be Paul Della Villa, John Maurycy and Mechelle Smith.  A legacy tribute honoring the undefeated 1967 Mont Pleasant High School football team will also be part of the ceremony slated for Monday, September 11, at Proctors.

Paul Della Villa was an All-American running back (Coach and Athlete Magazine) on the 1963 Mont Pleasant HS football team.  He started on three Mont Pleasant football teams, scoring eight touchdowns as a junior and sixteen touchdowns as a senior.  He scored five touchdowns in a game vs. Kingston in 1963.  Della Villa was also the 1963 Section II 220-yard champion.  He went on to play football at Boston College, where he scored eight touchdowns during his career.  He led BC in scoring in 1966 and was an ECAC Division I All-East Weekly Team selection in November, 1968.  He played professional football for the Quincy Giants, a Boston (New England) Patriots farm team.  He was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player in 1969.  He is a member of the Mont Pleasant Sports Hall of Fame and Capital Region Football Hall of Fame.

John Maurycy was a key member of the 1954 Mont Pleasant HS golf team that won the New York State championship.  He was also the second leading scorer, behind Hall of Famer Lou Jordan, on the 1954-55 MP basketball team.  He won the Schenectady County Amateur Golf championship at age 16.  Maurycy finished eighth in the Hearst National Junior Tournament in Baltimore.  He won the 1960 Eastern New York Golf Championship at Shaker Ridge.  He became a golf professional at age 21. Maurycy qualified for three U.S. Opens (1963-65), missing the cut by two strokes in 1963 and one stroke in 1964.  He also played in one PGA Championship.  He competed on the PGA Tour (1966-67).  He led qualifying at Oklahoma City.  He held course records at Mt. Anthony (63), Schuyler Meadows (63) and Mohawk Golf Club (64).  He is a two-time Northeastern New York PGA champion and was inducted into the Northeastern New York PGA Hall of Fame in 2016.    

Mechelle Smith was a basketball player, shot putter and discus thrower at Linton HS in the late 1970s.  She went on to have a brilliant career in Taekwondo. She is a three-time National Champion (U.S Taekwondo Union) and 14-time National Taekwondo Champion (AAU).  She participated in the trials for the first U.S. Olympic Taekwondo Team in 1988 and was a first alternate.  Smith was a 1992 U.S.A. team member and gold medalist (middleweight) at the Pan-Am Taekwondo Championships.  She was also a 2001 World Taekwondo Champion.  Smith is a 2003 (NY Female Instructor of the Year) and 2004 (Master) U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee.  She won gold medals in U.S. Cup Championships, representing the U.S. vs. Korea, Canada and Puerto Rico.  She is a fourth degree black belt – (Kukkiwon, Korea) and a seventh degree black belt (AAU  Taekwondo). 

The 2017 Legacy Tribute will honor the 1967 Mont Pleasant HS football team on the 50th anniversary of its undefeated season (8-0).  The Red Raiders were Class “A” League champions and were ranked #1 in New York State in a sportswriters’ poll (no NYSPHAA Football Tournament was held at this time).  The team was led by head coach Larry Mulvaney and assistant coach Tony Parisi.  Lineman Gale Knull was an All-American (Parade) and running back Ron Page was an Honorable Mention All-American (Scholastic Coach).  Mulvaney, Parisi and Page are members of the SCSD Athletic Hall of Fame.
