Tedisco to join Schenectady school for
“America’s Legislators Back to School” kick-off

SCHENECTADY - September 20–23 kicks off “America’s Legislators Back to School,” a program that gives elected officials the opportunity to meet with students to answer questions, share ideas, listen to concerns and impart a greater understanding of the legislative processes necessary for developing effective public policy and engaged citizens.

Assemblyman James Tedisco will be at Elmer Avenue Elementary School on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. to talk to students about the responsibilities of legislators and the pressures, debate, negotiation and compromise that are part of representative democracy.

America’s Legislators Back to School Program kicks off the third week of every September and runs through the school year.   The program began as a pilot in 1999 and proved successful in getting young people interested in the political process.  According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, the program results in significantly higher levels of understanding and appreciation of representative democracy among middle school students.
