School name
changes
When students
return to school in the fall, they will find that a few of their
schools have different names. The Board of Education
approved the following name changes at the meeting on Wednesday
night.
School of
Business and International Studies
The Global
Commerce House at Schenectady High School will now be known as
School of Business and International Studies.
The name change
was made because the original name did not catch on with
students and administrators felt that there was a problem with
the house's identity. The house, which includes 565
students, is smaller than the other houses at the high school.
Associate
Superintendent Gregory Fields noted that focus groups addressed
the topic during the school year. Students, parents,
eighth grade students, teachers and counselors were surveyed
about the house name. It was determined that middle school
students and families were confused by the name and that the
former name did not reflect the the theme of the smaller
learning community or the course of studies.
The house offers
the International Baccalaureate Program, world languages and an
array of business courses. The new name better reflects
the focus on developing 21st century job skills and preparing
students to work in an international community that depends upon
subject knowledge beyond the scope of business.
Steinmetz
Career and Leadership Academy
The Career Center
at Steinmetz will now be known as Steinmetz Career and
Leadership Academy.
The former name no
longer adequately reflects the vision, instructional delivery
and focus of learning of the the smaller learning community
located at the Steinmetz school building. While the name
served the smaller learning community well for the past six
years, the school has changed from offering career and technical
education courses as alternative pathways to now focusing on
developing leaders with 21st century knowledge and skills.
A building survey
was conducted and students were offered the opportunity to
provide suggestions for a new name. The school design team
considered a number names. Steinmetz Career and Leadership
Academy was selected so that emphasis will be on the learning
goals and processes of the academy.
Katharine Burr
Blodgett Elementary School will now be known as Katharine
Burr Blodgett Success Academy for Middle School Students.
The Katharine Burr
Blodgett Elementary School closed after the 2009-2010 school
year and a new program will be be housed in the school building.
Blodgett's name will be carried over with the new program.
The former
elementary school building will now house the program that was
similar to the program called Steinmetz Achievement Academy and
was located at Steinmetz School. The Achievement Academy
was designed as an alternative education program that offered
new strategies to help students who weren't experiencing success
in school, the opportunity to succeed in a different
environment. The program was offered to students who
failed to earn promotion to the ninth or tenth grades. It gave
them opportunities to recover credits and succeed the following
year when they returned to the traditional learning environment.
Because the
program has proven to be more successful for middle school
students, it has been modified and will instead be offered to
seventh and eighth grade students in the fall instead of ninth
grade students.
The new name
reflects both changes - the name of building in which the
program will be housed and the grade level of the students who
will be involved in the program.
