Schenectady
teachers are awarded grants
from educational foundation
The Schenectady
City School District Educational Foundation recently announced
that nine Schenectady teachers will be awarded grants that
support educational learning activities.
Congratulations
to Andrea Baran, Krista Hawk, Deborah Katz, Sue Look, Laurie
Kelly, Jennifer Lamb, Lisa Longe, Kristen Majkut and Heather
O'Leary.
Look, a second
grade teacher at William C. Keane Elementary School and her
colleagues will be purchasing fiction and non-fiction books for
the second grade classes. The books will be used primarily
for social studies instruction and with themes of compassion and
understanding.
O'Leary, an
English as a Second Langauge teacher and Ottavio Lopiccolo at
Van Corlaer Elementary School, will be taking their students to
the Brookside Museum for the Sheep to Shawl program.
The students will complete oral reports and create a book about
their experiences mastering key language arts skills and social
studies concepts.
The Schenectady
High School Women's Choir, directed by Krista Hawk, will be
performing with the College of St. Rose Women's Choir in Costa
Rica in March. The grant funding will help offset the cost
of the trip. Following the trip, the students will work in
small groups to create a presentation that encompasses the
history, culture, music and geography of Costa Rica. Their
personal experiences will be shared on the district website.
Teachers at the
Steinmetz Career and Leadership Academy (SCLA) proposed an array
of educational ideas. Katz, a science teacher, will
purchase five digital microscopes to be used by more than 200
students in the Regents Living Environment Lab course. The
microscopes facilitate hands-on project based learning which
will be assessed through graded lab activities.
Majkut, also a
teacher at SCLA, will use grant funding to purchase laptop
backpacks for students who are unable to purchase their own.
Kelly, Jim
Keough, Laura Macey and Alicia Faucett, all teachers at SCLA,
have been awarded funding to help fund an activity associated
with the integrated classroom unit on business etiquette,
interviewing and conversational skills. Students will
create etiquette guides using technology such as PowerPoint,
Photo Story or video. Grant funds will be used to pay for
a business dinner at the Van Curler Dining Room where students
will mix with business professionals and practice using skills
necessary to participate in a business luncheon or dinner.
Grants have
also been awarded to support the Schenectady music program.
Baran, a music teacher at Van Corlaer will be purchasing bass
bars so the students can see how the diatonic scale looks and
how chords are made.
Music teacher
Lisa Longe has been awarded a grant to purchase music materials
for students who are not able to purchase their own.
Lamb, a band
and music teacher at Mont Pleasant Middle School, will be
purchasing acoustic guitars to be used by her 7th and 8th grade
music students. The students will learn to play simple
songs and create original compositions.
Congratulations
to the winners.
