42 Days and Counting
5th and 6th Graders Headed to
Washington for Spring Break
A group of 28 fifth and sixth graders from Lincoln and Paige
Elementary Schools will be traveling with Smithsonian
Student Travel (SST) to tour Washington D.C. during the week
of April 5, which is spring recess.
The three-day trip will include a directed tour of the
Smithsonian museums and a night tour of the Lincoln
Memorial, WWII Memorial and Korean War Veterans Memorial.
The students will also enjoy a guided tour of Washington
D.C.
“Students will learn first-hand about the places they’ve
read about in school and experience the impact of the famous
artwork, memorial, monuments and architecture in our
nation’s Capitol,” said Heather Legault, Schenectady art
teacher who is coordinating the trip and fundraising efforts
for Schenectady students.
Legault said that SST is providing the students with
educational materials that will complement the tour.
The students and their teacher have been holding a number of
fundraisers and raffles to help pay for the trip. Legault
said she has been raffling items donated by local businesses
including tickets from Proctor’s Theatre, a gift certificate
from Goldstocks Sporting Goods, a certificate for fitness
training valued at $300 at Best Fitness. “Local businesses
have been generous with their donations,” said Legault.
Parents and school staff members are also helping with the
efforts including a school dollar store. Staff members have
donated many items and are still selling lemonade and hot
chocolate during lunch.
“There’s 42 days and counting,” said Legault. “Everybody is
pretty excited.”
