Community Scientists
in the Making

Sam Lehrman and Alex Hu

Enthusiastic young scientists from Schenectady High School volunteered their time on a Sunday a few weeks ago at the NYS Museum during National Chemistry Week.

As the only high school team at the event, Schenectady students eagerly hosted two educational booths.  At one booth, the high school scientists taught families from all across the Capital Region about wonders of the elements.  The students made secret messages using their knowledge of chemistry in the second booth.

"It was good to see that kids can learn something about chemistry through a fun activity," said Olivia Leach, a senior at Schenectady High School.

In addition to serving as hosts at the event, the students took some time to check out demonstrations presented by colleges including Union and the University at Albany.

"I found every experiment there very fascinating," said Angela Rojas, a senior in the Schenectady High School International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.  "I definitely learned a lot."

Brelle Lassiter-Helou, a senior in the IB program enjoyed working with younger children.  "It was nice to interact with the children and get them interested in chemistry," said Lassiter-Helou.  "This not only happened in our booth but in all the other booths as well."

Schenectady students Nick Hyson, Madeline Kodesh and Kris Casey-Boehm also participated.
