Fields to take Schenectady High School interim leader post
Comley set to retire in June

Gregory Fields, house principal of the Career Center at Steinmetz, has been named interim Associate Superintendent for Schenectady High School effective July 1, 2010.  Fields will replace current high school leader Gary Comley who is set to retire June 30.

The appointment of Fields comes after a lengthy nationwide search and selection process that began in late winter.  Eric Ely, Superintendent of the Schenectady City School District, said that after a long and exhaustive search, the district did not find a suitable replacement.  Ely is recommending that the search be re-initiated in January 2011.

Fields has been in his current position since July 2005.  Although not located on the Schenectady High School campus, the Career Center is considered one of the high school’s five houses.  As house principal, Fields is responsible for building administration, management of the school’s operations, scheduling, budgeting, supervision of record-keeping, data reporting and administration of grant funds.  Prior to that, from 2004 – 2005, Fields served as community outreach specialist for the Schenectady City School District for which he coordinated parent and community outreach efforts, volunteer and student mentor programs and served as district liaison for community partnerships.

Fields will be taking over at a time when the high school is set to undergo a comprehensive restructuring process which will be implemented beginning in fall 2010.  I am very confident in Mr. Fields' ability to lead Schenectady High School through the restructuring plan implementation,” said Ely. “He is an innovative and collaborative school leader who is ready for this challenge.”

Fields agrees that the restructuring process will be a challenge but said he looks forward to the opportunity.  “I will work through the roles of educator, leader and manager in order to enhance a learning community that is dedicated to the continuous improvement of effective instruction,” said Fields.  He stresses the importance of motivation, achievement and morale of the staff members as well as the importance of community involvement.  “When one genuinely collaborates with all staff and the greater community, everyone is empowered and the learning environment is improved,” he said.

“This is a very exciting time to take on the leadership of the high school,” said Fields.  “I look forward to collaborating with the administrators, teachers, members of the staff and community to enhance the climate for learning and to promote excellence and achievement at Schenectady High School,” added Fields.

Fields received a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University, MBA from Pace University, MA in Education from the University of Phoenix (Online) and MS in Education, Educational Administration and Supervision from The College of Saint Rose.  He is currently enrolled in Educational and Administration and Policy Ph.D. Program at the University of Albany.  In addition to holding certification for School Administrator and Supervisor, School District Administrator and School Business Administrator, Fields is also a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Academy Instructor (CCAI).
