Attempted Abduction Thursday Morning
Remind Children How to Stay Safe

Last Thursday morning, a dark skin male driving a 4-door white vehicle, attempted to abduct a 12-year-old girl on Craig Street near the bridge.  The girl is safe and police are currently looking for the suspect.

If you have any information, please call the Schenectady Police Department at 382-5263.

If  it’s an emergency call please dial 9-1-1.

Please remind your children of these important Be Smart tips:

B uddy SystemDon’t walk alone.  Always take someone with you.
E yes OpenBe aware of your surroundings.

S tay Away from CarsDon’t be tricked into getting into a stranger’s car.
M ake a plan:  Let someone know where you are going and when you will be home.
A void Strangers:  Only speak to people you know.
R un Away:  If someone makes you feel uncomfortable make noise and run away.
T ell:  Tell an adult you know if someone bothers you.

Never assume your child will not be abducted.  It is very important that you establish an open dialogue with your child so he or she will confide in you in case of trouble.  Instruct your child to tell you if anyone has asked them to keep a secret from you.

Other tips for parents:

1.  Never leave your child unattended – not even for a minute.

2.  Make sure your child knows his/her full name, address and phone number including area code.  Teach him or her to use the telephone, including 911 in an emergency.

3.  Have his or her picture taken annually.

4.  Teach your child to avoid people they don’t know.  These people are strangers.  The ice cream man seen every day is still a stranger.

5.  Teach your child that adults usually do not ask children for directions.  If someone stops a car to ask for directions, instruct your child to walk away.

6.  Teach your child about abduction at an early age.

7.  Teach your child to never go anywhere with anyone who doesn’t know a family “code word.”

8.  Do not place your child’s name on any clothing or belongings visible to other persons.  This will make it harder for strangers to be on a first name basis.

9.  Teach your child not to answer the door or phone when you are not present.

10.  Know where your child is at all times.

11.  Know who your child’s friends are, where they live and their telephone numbers.

12.  Beware of any adult that showers your child with attention or gifts.

13.  Teach your child to go where there are people or to a safe house if they are being followed.  Show your child which houses are safe in the community.

14.  Teacher your child that it is appropriate to make a scene if there is a danger.  Teach him or her to yell “Help!” or “I don’t know you.”  Teach them to scatter belongs if they are forced anywhere.

15.  Be cautious selecting babysitters, preschools and daycare.  Check references.

16.  Instruct your child to report any suspicious incident immediately – such as someone hanging around in the schoolyard or park.

17.  Tell your child not to invite anyone into your house without your permission.

18.  Teach your child not to go into anyone's house without letting you know where they are.

19.  Make sure your child knows that no one has the right to touch any part of their bodies that a bathing suit would cover.

20.  Always accompany young children to public restrooms and accompany your child on any door-to-door activities such as fundraising or Halloween trick or treating.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child in school, please contact your child’s school immediately.

It is important that we work together to ensure the safety of your children.
