The Schenectady City School District Board of Education was recently named winner of the New York State School Board Recognition Award for demonstrating outstanding support for and commitment to high quality sequential arts education programs.  The award is presented each year by the New York State Alliance for Arts Education (NYSAAE) and the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA).  As the New York State winner,  the Schenectady nomination is sent to the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN) to be considered for the national award.

At the Board of Education meeting held at Paige Elementary School on November 7, Schenectady Superintendent Eric Ely applauded the board members for their commitment to Schenectady Schools after reading the congratulatory letter from Amy Williams, executive director of NYSSAE.

The state-level award recognizes districts that have included all four major artistic disciplines – visual arts, music, theater and dance – in their programs.  "The award panel commends the board's dedication to the arts in the midst of the many challenges commonly faced by urban schools," wrote Williams.  "It is evident that the school board provides support for a wide variety of courses for students in the arts, and educators in the district adhere to sequential, standards-based arts curricula, producing high-quality programs that enable students to learn in and through the arts in a meaningful way."

Williams commended the board for the district's partnerships with renowned cultural institutions which afford SCSD's students with first-class experiences in exemplary arts in education programs.  "The school board's encouragement of the district's art programs bonds teachers, students, parents and the community, working to accomplish the common goal of providing Schenectady's students with a quality education that includes all the arts."  Williams concluded, "Your school board is an inspiring example for other school leaders across New York State."

Fine Arts Coordinator Nancy Lussier and Sayles School of Fine Arts House Principal Peg Normandin submitted the nomination.
