More than 23,000 Children, Adults Served by Schools in Past Year (1951)

SCHENECTADY'S school system is the largest and most comprehensive public agency serving our community.  During the past school year the peak enrollment in regular day
schools was 12, 358 while more than 5,000 adults were registered in a wide range of evening classes.  The physical plant consists of 23 school buildings and an administration building with a total value of $10,422,000

The staff includes 551 full-time teachers and 23 principals.  School services embrace health, safety and physical fitness programs, educational experience in music, dramatics and art work, specialized technical and vocational training, as well as the basic curriculum in the Three R's and the traditional preparation for college.

During the past year the adult division provided program services for 124 PTA meetings with an aggregate attendance of 8,895.  Other community groups were assisted in organizing 439 meetings of an educational nature with an attendance of 10, 020.  Forty-eight parent study groups, involving 1,114 men and women joined with schools in exploring ways to handle the "growing-up" problems of their children.  The number of different individuals served by the division was about 11,000.

Considerable effort is made to met the special needs of youngsters in the day schools.  an example is the technical department at Mont Pleasant High School where pupils with a proficiency in mathematics and science may begin training for vocations as laboratory technicians or engineers.  Since the department was established 20 years ago, more than 15 other school systems in the United States and abroad have used it as a model.

Your public schools are dedicated to the training of youth for useful, effective citizenship.  Against forces of destruction at home and abroad the schools never faced a greater challenge in maintaining our free institutions, our way of life.
