“Let it snow!
Let it snow! Let it snow!” could have been the motto for
Explorer School teachers from across the country at the recent
History of Winter (HOW) program at Lake Placid. That’s right.
NASA scientists are interested in snow, how much falls, kinds of
snow, warmth of the snow at different levels in a snow pit, and
differences between ice and snow. Properties of snow have
serious implications for NASA satellites. Snow reflects light
that can interfere with remote sensing, data collection and
weather observations from the satellites Scientists can
predict avalanches by identifying a certain kind of snow in the
snow pack – called snow sugar. Visit
