Five Central Park Middle
School students including Shannon Turnball, Alex
Jurczynski, Briana Purtell, Dan Flora and Corinne Higgins
took a trip to NASA's Wallops flight facility in Virginia
in June. The purpose of the trip was to watch the
rocket carrying their experiments, launch into
space.
The rocket carried the
students' experiments 33 miles above the earth to measure
the effect that space flight has on common liquids.
The experiment used thermochron technology to record
temperature changes, radiation and exposure and force.
A thermochron is
a temperature probe
linked to a computer chip that is enclosed in a
stainless steel case. The experiments were
recovered and returned to the students a few hours after
the rocket's launch.
The students and two
Central Park teachers, Greg Rice and Danielle Hartkern
enjoyed this extraordinary opportunity. Not only did
they enjoy watching their experiments launch into space,
but they also spent time touring the Wallops
Flight Facility.
In 2003, Central Park was named the
first NASA Explorer School in New York State. In
addition to the FreeSPACE Mission and trip to Wallops,
students and teachers have benefited from a number of
lessons, workshops, NASA-related activities including
visits from experts and scientists from Johnson Space
Center in Houston and the Goddard Space Flight Center in
Maryland.
